12th Colloquium on Mediation in Dialogue
Emotions in Mediation: A Prospective Dialogue
June 4, 2025
Online Colloquium
ZOOM platform
Emotions play a crucial role in how we perceive the world, make decisions and relate to others, and are deeply connected to our physical and mental wellbeing. Understanding emotions is therefore essential in various contexts of life, including mediation, where emotions play a central role. In situations of conflict, emotions arise intensely and, if not properly recognised and managed, can hinder dialogue and the building of mutual understanding.
Mediators, as facilitators of the dialogue and conflict management process, play a key role in identifying and validating emotions – both their own and those of the participants. This process of emotional (self-)awareness is essential for overcoming communication barriers, promoting active listening and fostering mutual understanding – aspects that contribute directly to the success of mediation. By recognising and valuing the role of emotions, mediators help to build fairer, more lasting and more satisfactory solutions for everyone involved.
Given the importance of emotions for both
the parties involved in mediation and the mediators themselves, AMEDIIC – Associação Mediálogo will dedicate its 12th Colloquium to discussion and reflection on ‘Emotions in Mediation: A Forward-Looking Dialogue’.
The objectives of this Colloquium are:
i) to analyse the importance of emotions in mediation;
ii) to discuss the role of emotions and mediators’ emotional self-awareness;
iii) to share experiences regarding emotions in mediation.
Scheduled for 4 June 2025, this colloquium will bring together national and international experts, who will be invited to share their knowledge and experiences, with a particular focus on work relating to emotions, addressing a preventive and transformative perspective on conflicts and human relationships.
